19th Century Commander

This is an unoffical, working title for a forthcoming set of rules based on Blitzkrieg Commander and Cold War Commander.

The aim is to cover the transition from smooth bore muzzle-loaders to breech-loading rifles (both hand firearms and artillery. I do find transitional periods interesting - hence my enthusiasm for the 16th century Italian Wars as well as the 19th century.

On that basis I would expect to include the last wars fought entirely with muzzle-loaders and the first few fought entirely with breech-loaders. The Dreyse Needle Gun was adopted by the Prussian army in 1848 and most armies had switched to rifled breech-loaders by 1890. Allowing for 10 years either side of those days we find we neatly encompass the Victorian era.

The wars listed below all include battles with at least 10,000 men on at least one side. Smaller actions aren't precluded, but the aim for now is to deal with the larger ones.

1839-1842 First Anglo-Afghan War

1845-1846 First Anglo-Sikh War

1846-1848 Mexican-American War

1848-1866 Italian Independence wars

1848-1849 Second Anglo-Sikh War

1848-1851 First war of Schleswig

1853-1856 Crimean War

1857-1858 Indian Mutiny

1861-1865 American Civil War

1862-1867 French invasion of Mexico

1864 Second war of Schleswig

1864-1870 War of the Triple Alliance (aka Paraguay War)

1866 Austro-Prussian War (aka Seven Weeks War)

1870-1871 Franco-Prussian War

1877-1878 Russo-Turkish War, 1877-78

1878-1880 Second Anglo-Afghan War

1879 Anglo-Zulu War

1884-1899 the Mahdist War

1895-1896 First Italo-Abyssinian War

1898 Spanish-American War

1899-1902 Second Boer War

Input, ideas and suggestions all gratefully received!
